SCUBA diving is a unique sport that requires training in order to do the activity safely. Sometimes people think it is ok for their SCUBA diving buddy who is a certified diver to take them out SCUBA diving without the proper training. This is a dangerous path to take as not knowing even the basics of SCUBA diving can put you at risk for serious injury, including death. So, is it legal to SCUBA dive without certification or is it illegal? Read on to find out the answer and more!
Is It Illegal to SCUBA Dive Without a License or Certification?
In most countries around the world, SCUBA diving requires a certification card or license to dive. A good dive operation will ask to see your certification card before allowing you to dive with them. However, if you were to go SCUBA diving somewhere on your own, like a shore entry with your buddy’s gear, there would be no one to stop you.
There are no SCUBA police out there ready to fine or arrest you for diving without a license like you would driving without a license. Is it smart to SCUBA dive without a certification? No. Is it illegal? No.
Dive Exceptions
Just like most things in life, there are always exceptions to the rules. In SCUBA diving, you can dive in the ocean without a certification if you take what’s called a Discover SCUBA class. This is an experience and not a certification course. This would allow someone that is not certified to go SCUBA diving with minimal training under the supervision of a dive professional. This is very popular at resorts around the world.
SCUBA Certification
A SCUBA diving certification is a course that starts with learning about the basics of SCUBA diving like how the physics of pressure affects your body, how long you can stay underwater, what to do if a certain thing happens while diving, and so many more things! There is a basic open water SCUBA certification class followed by more advanced classes that teach more skills to handle many different types of environments and tasks while SCUBA diving.
The SCUBA certifications never expire. However, if it has been a while since you SCUBA dived, then a refresher course is recommended.

What Can Happen If You SCUBA Dive Without Certification?
What if no one taught you how to drive a car? Would you know where the gas and brake are? Or how to shift it in to the right gear to go forward or backward? How come in SCUBA diving you can’t just hop in the water and put a hose of air in your mouth? This maybe isn’t the best analogy because SCUBA diving is not like learning how to do just one thing. Rather, in SCUBA courses, you are taught how to handle situations that may arise.
SCUBA diving is considered an extreme sport. As humans, you are defying science and breathing underwater. Wouldn’t you want to know how to do it safely? If you SCUBA dive without a certification, what could happen on the most extreme level is death. Serious injuries and big medical bills could also be the risks. SCUBA diving without a license might not be the most wise decision.
The Dangers Of SCUBA Diving Without A Certification
There are many dangers in SCUBA diving that you will learn in a certification course, but the top three dangers of SCUBA diving are:
- Diver error: SCUBA diving errors are already a top reason for diver injury or death in certified SCUBA divers. These risks are greatly increased without a license to SCUBA dive.
- Decompression sickness (DCS, also known as “the bends”): There will always be a small risk for DCS even if you have license to SCUBA dive. However, learning how to reduce your risks is very important which is taught in the course.
- Lung overexpansion injury (pulmonary barotrauma): If you hold your breath and ascend, the air in your lungs can expand and rupture the lungs. Proper training teaches you how to reduce your risk of lung overexpansion.
SCUBA Skills Taught In Courses
Of the many SCUBA diving skills you learn in the courses, how to handle stress and potential emergencies are perhaps the most important as they could be life saving. Simpler things like how to clear a mask or maintain proper buoyancy are also taught.
Overall, while it is not illegal to SCUBA dive, it is smart to get the certification. The certification never expires and more importantly, it teaches you the skills that keep the sport safe. As the saying goes, live to dive another day!
