January 23rd, 2024   Posted In: Articles

Over the years, we’ve answered a plethora of questions pertaining to wetsuits, watersports, and more. But never have we ever actually answered the question ‘Do you put on a wetsuit wet or dry?’. So, there’s just a little fun fact of the day. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

There are many reasons why you’d wear a wetsuit and what activity you’d be wearing it for. And just like most of the decisions you make in life, you’d have to make the decision of if you put a wetsuit on wet or on dry. Continue reading to find out more!

Is It Easier to Put on a Wetsuit Wet or Dry?

There is really no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The answer is that it’s based simply on your personal preference. That said, you came here for answers, and we’re going to give you our professional opinion on the subject. You can take it from there.

It’s worlds easier when you put a wet wetsuit on when you’re wet. Same goes for putting a dry wetsuit on when you’re dry. Now, if you want to be a daredevil and try tackling a wet or damp suit when you’re dry – and vice versa – be our guest. But it won’t be a pretty sight or experience.

Do You Wet a Wetsuit Before Putting It On?

Googlers asked, therefore we’re answering this question too. Just like above, we’d highly recommend that if you want to wet a wetsuit before putting it on, then make sure you’re wet too. If you’re wet and the suit is dry, that could lead to tears or damage to the suit because you’re trying to finagle your way in something that’s just not working.

But if you insist on putting a wet wetsuit on while dry or a dry wetsuit on while wet here’s a little hack from us to you: use plastic bags. Wetsuit socks are also a great option. Through trial and error, we’ve found that the most stubborn section when getting into a suit is the feet. That’s where a plastic baggie or wetsuit socks come in. Try it out. You’ll thank us later.

To Sum It Up

So, do you put on a wetsuit wet or dry? Totally up to you. But we hope that by the time you’ve finished reading this post, you’ll know that in order to save yourself time and grief, it’s simply easier to get into a wetsuit when you’re wet and to get into a dry wetsuit when you’re dry. Opposites just don’t attract in this case, so don’t force it.

FAQ: Do You Put On a Wetsuit Wet or Dry?

Got more questions on this topic and need answers? We’ve got you covered below!

Is it better to put on a wetsuit wet or dry?

It depends on your situation, but generally, it’s easiest to match your condition to the suit. If you’re dry, put on a dry wetsuit. If you’re already wet, putting on a wet wetsuit tends to be smoother. Mixing the two (wet suit + dry body or vice versa) usually makes things more difficult.

Why is it hard to put on a wetsuit when you’re dry?

Wetsuits are designed to fit snugly to trap a thin layer of water against your skin. When both you and the suit are dry, there’s more friction, which makes it harder to slide the neoprene into place. Especially around the legs, hips, and shoulders.

Should you wet a wetsuit before putting it on?

You can, but it’s not always necessary. Some people lightly wet their wetsuit to make it easier to put on, especially in warmer conditions. If you do this, it’s best if your body is also wet to avoid unnecessary friction or stress on the material.

Is it bad to put on a wetsuit while wet if the suit is dry?

Not necessarily bad, but it can be awkward. A wet body against a dry suit can create uneven friction, making it harder to pull the suit up smoothly. It’s not damaging in most cases, but it’s definitely less comfortable.

What’s the easiest way to put on a tight wetsuit?

A few simple tricks can make a big difference:

  • Use plastic bags (and other wetsuit entry hacks) or wetsuit socks on your feet and hands
  • Take your time and pull the suit up gradually
  • Avoid yanking too hard on the neoprene
  • Make sure the suit is the correct size

These small adjustments can save you a lot of frustration.

Can putting on a wetsuit the wrong way damage it?

Yes, it can. Forcing a wetsuit on – especially when there’s too much friction – can stretch or even tear the neoprene over time. Being patient and using simple tools like bags or socks helps protect both you and your suit.

Do surfers usually put wetsuits on before getting wet?

Most surfers put their wetsuit on while dry, right at the beach or in the parking lot. It’s typically faster and more convenient, especially when you’re gearing up before heading into the water.

Does water inside the wetsuit help it fit better?

Yes, once you’re in the water, a thin layer of water enters the suit and warms up from your body heat. This actually improves comfort and flexibility, which is why wetsuits often feel better once you’re fully in the water!
